Osteopathy & Pregnancy

A woman’s body changes during pregnancy. Those changes include the softening of ligaments, weight increase and changes to posture. That can lead to additional pressure on joints in various parts of the body, including the spine or pelvis The ovaries produce the hormone relaxin which causes ligaments to soften, allowing the pelvic bones to shift slightly during delivery. This is a good thing of course because it makes delivery easier. Unfortunately, the softening of the ligaments also affects the whole body which means it’s much more vulnerable to strain as it changes to accommodate your baby.

Gentle hands-on osteopathic treatment can ease some of your symptoms including:

  • Joint pains
  • General, acute & chronic backache, back pain
(not arising from injury or accident)
  • Generalised aches and pains
  • Circulatory problems
  • Muscle spasms
It’s not known exactly why pelvic pain affects some women, but it’s thought to be caused by a pelvic joint problem. PGP, formally known as Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction, affects 1 in 5 pregnant women and symptoms can occur at any stage during or following pregnancy.
