What is Turmeric?
At Solihull Osteopathic Practice we offer a number of products including Turmeric to help our patients. Turmeric is a plant that is part of the ginger family. It has been used in Indian and Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Now, in the West, it is recognised as an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory.
What are the benefits?
Turmeric has an antioxidant effect, similar to Vitamins C and E. Turmeric is high in the component curcumin, this compound has powerful anti-inflammatory effects. Curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties can help to ease pain in the muscles and joints, especially in the shoulder, knee, and elbow joints. Curcumin may also relieve the inflammation and pain of arthritis. Studies suggest that turmeric may lower blood cholesterol levels and increase the production of liver enzymes. This can protect the liver and may be helpful for people with indigestion. The curcumin component can improve the function of the endothelium – the lining of the blood vessels. This may lower your risk of heart disease. Curcumin is also considered preventative against cancerous cells and can contribute to the death of these cells in the body, as well as reducing the growth of new blood vessels in tumours.
Why do we recommend it?
At Solihull Osteopathic Practice, we have been recommending turmeric for a long time as many of our patients experience joint pain and inflammation. Due to it’s anti-inflammatory effects, we believe it to be a beneficial supplement alongside osteopathy. Everyone can benefit from taking a turmeric supplement due to its many benefits and preventions.
We started stocking supplements so that it is convenient for our patients to purchase. The turmeric that we sell is a high potency standardised root extract, containing 95% curcuminoids, meaning that it is a pure grade extract. It is also suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
