hip pain

Hip pain can be an unfortunate discomfort which can cause you difficulty in completing everyday tasks. Suffering with pain in your hip can also limit your mobility and effect the way that you stand and move. Although hip pain most commonly stems from injury, there are lots of possible causes.

Here we look at the different types of hip pain and how osteopathy can help you:

Types of Hip Pain

Issues with our hips can be very painful and can lead to more serious conditions, which is why it is so important seek help as soon as possible:

Osteoarthritis

This occurs due to wear and tear of the hip, resulting in the space between your cartilage and joint narrowing. This may cause pain in the groin, leg and knee. Although your osteopath will not be able to cure your arthritis, they can provide treatment for pain relief.

Pubic Symphysis Disorder

With this condition you may experience pain and tenderness alongside your joint margin, where your pelvic bone and pubic area meets. This can stem from knee misalignment, but can also be common in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Snapping Hip

A Snapping Hip is most noticeable by the clicking sound it creates on hip rotation. This is caused by your iliotibial band and/or psoas tendon knocking on your thigh bone. Although this itself is not a major issue, it can lead to Hip Bursitis which makes it important to seek treatment.

Pinched Hip Capsule

Sufferers of a Pinched Hip will experience short bursts of sharp pain on the outside of your hip, especially when you have weight bearing on the one side. This can cause your hip capsule to be pinched between two bony surfaces.

Initial Examination

During your initial examination your osteopath will examine your entire body, not only your hips. This follows the philosophy that once your whole body is properly aligned, your body can function a lot more smoothly. Through massaging, stretching and manipulation of your muscles, it can help to relieve your hip pain.

In some cases, your osteopath may require a scan, X-Ray or other tests for a more accurate diagnosis. You could be referred to a specialist or GP.

Receiving Your Treatment

With hip pain, your osteopathic treatment may involve gentle massaging of your hip muscles. This should stretch the hip joint to help reduce the tension you feel and therefore improve the mobility of your hip joints. Your osteopath can then move onto any linked discomforts, such as back pain.
