What Is The Perrin Technique?
Perrin Technique is an osteopathic method which diagnoses and treats patients suffering from Myalgic Encephalitis (ME), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), and Fibromyalgia. CFS and ME are caused by an accumulation of inflammatory chemical and toxic substances in the brain and spinal cord, leading to dysfunction of the sympathetic nervous system. The intention of the technique is to drain the toxins from the body by stimulating the lymphatic system. It is vital to have healthy lymphatic drainage to prevent further accumulation of toxins. In ME/CFS sufferers the sympathetic nervous system may have been placed under stress for many years before the onset of symptoms. This stress may be due to strain or injury or due to emotional or environmental causes, A final trigger, usually a viral infection, leads to a breakdown of the nervous systems and reversal of the flow of toxins towards the brain and spinal cord. Some patients will entirely recover from ME/CFS while others will experience a decrease in symptoms and improved energy levels,
How it works?
To treat the symptoms of CFS/ME, an osteopath will target the lymphatics on the chest and back. The aim of this approach is to target and improve the lymphatic system, focusing on increasing fluid motion around the brain and spinal cord. Through a series of massage techniques, toxins are drained from the blood and detoxified and released from the body by the liver.
Diagnosing – How to know if you require treatment.
If you think you have or have been diagnosed with, CFS/ME, an osteopathic diagnosis can be made. This will be based on an in-depth case history, several questionnaires, plus a physical examination. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you might be suited for a consultation and treatment:
- Extreme tiredness – struggling to complete daily activities due to lethargy
- Still feeling tired after rest or sleep
- Taking a long time to recover after physical activity
- Sleeping problems – waking up during the night
- Problems with thinking, memory, and concentration
Initial Consultation
If you decide to undertake Perrin treatment, you will be required to attend an initial consultation with an osteopath. This consultation will be an hour and a half to two hours long and will include a diagnosis, scoring the severity of the symptoms, and establishing a treatment plan and timeframe for patient improvement. We recommend that patients bring a chaperone to the first few appointments as we require a lot of information, and this can be quite tiring for the patient. At Solihull Osteopathic Practice, we pride ourselves on offering quality and professional support to help everyone who comes to us achieve optimal health.
