wrist pain

Although hand and wrist pain is not very common, when it does occur it can be painful. Suffering in this area can restrict your daily routine as you may find difficulty in moving and grasping objects. To relieve discomfort, it is best to have the affected area examined for treatment as soon as possible.

A lot of pain in the hands and wrists are caused by strenuous activities, injury or infection. See a few examples of possible causes below and how our team at Solihull Osteopathic Practice can help:

Arthritis

Arthritis is a common cause of wrist and hand pain, particularly in older generations. It can be a result of infection or injury to your joints, causing a natural breakdown of your cartilage tissue. You may experience pain and swelling in the affected areas.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can stem from repetitive activities, including typing, writing and sewing. The compression on your median nerve caused by swelling on your wrist can lead to uncomfortable symptoms, including numbness, tingling, burning or pain. You may also find trying to grasp objects quite difficult.

Ligamentous Strains and Sprains

Sprains and strains most often occur in your wrist when holding your hand out to prevent falling. When the ligaments which attach your bone to bone are strained, bruised or swollen, it can limit your wrist’s movement.

Tendinopathy

Tendinopathy is caused by the inflammation of your tendon sheaths, located near the tendons responsible for attaching your muscle to bone. When this happens, your hand or wrist can become painful and swollen.

How Osteopathy Can Help

Osteopaths are primary health care practioners who look at your body has a whole, rather than just the affected area. Osteopathy follows the philosophy that your body functions much better when in alignment, which is what our treatment looks to achieve.

A qualified osteopath can assess the affected area and determine the cause of your hand or wrist pain. If required, they can then advise you on necessary treatment to help relieve feelings of pain or discomfort. Recommended osteopathic treatments may include massaging, stretching, joint mobilisation or at-home exercises.

To help your hand or wrist to recover we may extend the treatment to your arm, shoulder and upper back if your osteopath believes they may also be affected.
